Leading Well in Uncertainty:
Is It Even Possible?
Over the last month, we polled our community about how to lead in times of uncertainty and what it feels like to experience healthy leadership when business conditions are unclear.
These polls were more than engagement tools; they became a snapshot of what organizations need most – executive coaching and professional business coaching services.
Uncertainty often tests leadership. Owners and executives face economic pressure, staffing challenges, technology transitions, and shifting priorities that require more than strategy alone. This is where many seek a trusted business coach to strengthen communication, perspective, and decision-making.
Our first question asked: “As a leader, how do you lead in uncertain times?”
• 79% – Stay steady and communicate well
• 14% – Adapt fast & pivot when needed
• 7% – Wing it & hope for the best
• 0% – Grin in and bear it
We couldn’t agree more. When vision is shared, companies are better positioned to overcome uncertainty all around and move confidently into the next season.
We also asked: “What’s your go-to when you pivot during uncertain times?”
• 67% – Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome
• 33% – All of the above, including Encouraging Resourcefulness and Taking the fastest path to revenue
This feedback mirrors what we address in our executive and small-business coaching: balancing revenue goals with people-first leadership rather than short-term reactions.
Employees’ experiences confirmed what leaders shared – employees desire trust and vision from those guiding them.
The first employee poll asked: “If times are uncertain, what do you look for most from your leaders?”
• 90% – Clear communication, authenticity, and trust
• 10% – Security in role above all
• 0% – Reactionary & mindful presence
• 0% – Vision first, future cast
A second employee poll asked: “What keeps you motivated during seasons of uncertainty?”
• 67% – Clear personal goals
• 33% – Clear personal + defined team goals
• 0% – New job with new leadership
Goals and trust drive employee performance. Organizations that invest in leadership development are far more likely to withstand political, social, economic, and technological change. Companies across the Southeast, particularly those searching for a Greenville business coach or executive leadership coach, continue to express that coaching is what makes the difference between owner dependency and sustainable organizational growth.
