Hello, my name is AI. What’s your name?

Ever wondered if you’re talking to a “bot”? Or perhaps you’ve been the “bot” during an interview? And does it even matter? We’re here today to give you some industry insights into AI in recruitment and what we feel are the Do’s and Don’ts of AI when you’re searching for a job.

As a recruitment and consulting firm with over 50 years of combined experience in recruitment on our team, we have read countless resumes and talked with thousands of people. We have an eye to spot resumes written by people and an ear to know when we’re talking to a “bot”. Our advice to you – view AI as a tool, not a replacement. So here’s how we suggest you utilize the AI tool.

DO – Dial in your job skills on your resume That’s correct, we didn’t say AI writes a resume. You need to write it and include your skills. Whether you’re a recent grad or 20+ years into your career, you will want to include concise details about your job skills. This can be challenging to reign it all in, so tap into AI to help you be concise. Remember, you as a person will be expected to fulfill any job you are hired to do. Be sure any AI-generated suggestions are skills on your resume that you know how to do and can elaborate on during an interview.

DON’T ask AI to write your resume based on a job description. Just don’t do it. Anyone who writes job descriptions will see your resume as a regurgitated job description and will not be impressed.

DO use AI as an Interview guide Speaking of interviews, AI can be a great resource when preparing for an interview. If you ask AI about interview questions you can review in advance to help you formulate the best answers with examples from your prior work experience.

DON’T have AI on during phone or video interviews and use AI to answer your questions. The delays are noticeable, and you will lose all credibility.

DO – Acknowledge your use of AI. Rather than avoid it, bring it to the forefront. Make a notation that you used AI to assist in generating your resume/interview notes to best capture the highlights of your experience. When speaking during an interview, highlight what you learned about AI when preparing your materials.

DON’T misrepresent yourself. If asked if you used AI in your work, do not say AI wasn’t used. Written materials can be screened for AI generation. If you’re caught in a lie, your credibility will plummet, and you will not get the job.

AI is a helpful tool when used appropriately to enhance written materials as well as prepare you for interviews. The important takeaway here is that AI is merely a tool, not a replacement for you and your given voice.
